An official inauguration ceremony took place on September 17, 2024 for the newly renovated classrooms at the University Institute of Technology (IUT), of the University of the Comoros. This project is part of the “Masomo-Nahazi” initiative funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) aimed at improving and enhancing the university’s capacity to accommodate students; administration; and the educational system. The Minister of Higher Education, Bacar Mvoulana, participated in this event, which represents an important development in the educational infrastructure of the Comoros Republic.
In his speech, Minister Bacar Mvoulana praised the contribution and financial support from the European Union to the “Masomo-Nahazi” project, amounting to 97,000,000 Comorian francs, of which 45,000,000 Comorian francs were used for the renovation of these classrooms.
The Minister of Higher Education clarified that the renovation of classrooms is merely a step in the Comorian government’s commitment through the Ministry of Higher Education to improve the educational offering in the Comoros. He also expressed his aspirations to build an educational system that meets the country’s expectations, including introduction of new training units, establishment of a multi-party administration, and development of income-generating activities to ensure some financial independence for the institution, while continuing to invest in infrastructure and educational tools.
Moreover, the Minister of Higher Education took the opportunity to remind teachers of the necessity to adhere to the agreement concerning the school year 2024-2025, originally scheduled for September 23. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment and the measures taken to facilitate this school year, including the payment of teachers’ salaries for September in accordance with the provisions of the new amended financial law and the prompt appointment of the Chairman of the University of the Comoros’ Board. Additionally, 11 halls have been renovated, including six classrooms and five administrative rooms, as well as the restrooms.
